Billings Clinic selects Carevive as a partner for remote monitoring of cancer treatment symptoms and delivery of leading-edge virtual care for patients and families.

Billings will also join the Carevive OPT-IN® Network to help build patient experience databases needed for clinical research and continuous clinical practice improvement.

North Miami, FL – 8/30/20 —Billings Clinic, located in Billings, Montana, is committed to providing quality oncology specialty services throughout a vast geographic region. Today, Billings supports one of the largest oncology outreach services in the country, extending into neighboring Wyoming, Idaho, and North Dakota. By partnering with Carevive and Cerner for remote symptom monitoring, Billings can virtually manage symptoms for remote patients on active treatment and reduce avoidable ED visits and hospitalizations. On average, 53% of patients on chemotherapy are hospitalized at some time during a given year. Proactive symptom surveillance using electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) can reduce hospitalizations and emergency room visits by up to 10%.

Carevive was selected by Billings for the evidence-based content embedded in its oncology platform and the depth of integration with the Cerner EHR. Carevive technology supports a comprehensive approach to cancer care starting at diagnosis and spanning the entire patient journey. Clinically validated ePRO instruments developed by cancer and symptom subject-matter experts help identify patients fit for specific treatments, and those that may need additional support. Carevive has studied, and now adopted, optimal workflows for navigators to deliver patient-centered treatment care plans and monitor and manage patient symptoms at home in collaboration with the treating provider.

“Monitoring patient symptoms and keeping patients on active treatment is an important step in improving clinical outcomes,” said Billings Cancer Center Director Rhonda Gradwohl. “The integrated Cerner and Carevive technologies will enable our providers and patients to stay connected across our extensive oncology service area.”

Billings participation in the OPT-IN® network will enable its oncology leadership and research teams to access aggregated patient experience data and benchmark to the Carevive OPT-IN® network for continuous quality improvement. Carevive manages the nation’s largest real-world patient experience database, insights from which will be used by health systems to improve cancer clinical outcomes, and by life sciences to improve drug development and advance cancer science.

“We are thrilled to officially bring Billings Clinic into the Carevive provider network,” said Carevive Chief Executive Officer Madelyn Trupkin Herzfeld. “Billings was an initial beta client. Without their initial testing, we would not be the success we are today. Billings is the perfect partner for Carevive because its clinical, IT, and administrative teams care deeply about the cancer patient experience and have always been innovative in providing care across a diverse and rural population.”
