One of the largest non-profit health systems, and a national leader in value-based cancer care, will embed Carevive into Cerner’s EHR workflow in preparation for CMS’ Oncology Care First

North Miami, FL 6/15/2020 — Banner Health, one of the country’s largest nonprofit hospital systems, announced that they have partnered with Carevive to deliver patient care plans and provide home-based symptom management as they prepare for CMS’ Oncology Care First (OCF) model. Banner was a leading performer in CMS’ first alternative payment model, the Oncology Care Model (OCM). Carevive’s oncology digital platform will integrate with Banner Health’s Cerner electronic health record (EHR) so that care teams can efficiently deliver personalized treatment care plans for the newly diagnosed patient, survivorship care plans those coming off active treatment, and to conduct home-based symptom management. Home-based symptom management will be possible using Carevive PROmpt®, a patient-reported outcomes (PRO) platform.

OCF, the next-generation oncology value-based payment model to succeed OCM, was announced November 2019 and aims to build upon the lessons learned with OCM, primarily the positive impact enhanced patient services had had on reducing acute care utilization. The current OCM demonstration project will expire in June 2021, and the OCF model is expected to commence in January 2021 and terminate December 2025.  Care planning and PRO implementation in the clinic have been identified as required enhanced patient services for the upcoming program.

Dr. Basch, a pioneer in oncology e-PROs and Carevive’s Scientific Advisory Board Director stated, “It is laudable that electronic PROs are a foundational tenet of the proposed OCF alternative payment model.  This is the fruition of research showing clinical and utilization benefits when PROs are integrated into clinical oncology practice.”  A 766-patient study led by Ethan Basch, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Journal of the American Medical Association, showed improvements in quality of life and adherence to therapy, reductions in hospitalizations and ER admissions and improved survival for patients using a Patient-Reported Symptom Monitoring system similar to Carevive’s PROmpt product.

As a result of Banner implementing care planning and home-based symptom monitoring, they will receive their own cleaned Patient Experience Data, and use these insights for continuous practice improvement, which should ultimately improve the OCF participating practice’s performance payment.

“Providing cancer care demands extraordinary expertise and coordination to provide the best possible outcomes for each patient,” said Sandra Kurtin, PhD, ANP-C, AOCN, Director Advanced Practice and Clinical Integration.  “Carevive’s integrated platform will help Banner Health’s care team provide our cancer patients with highly personalized care plans.  We can’t wait to roll this out to our patients, they deserve it.”

“It is such a privilege to work with Banner to re-design workflows that allow them to deliver the highest quality cancer patient care. Since they are among the largest in the country, they need technology to deliver this special care at scale. Banner’s cancer clinicians are among the best in the country, and their passion and commitment to innovation is among the best I have ever seen in my career,” said Carevive Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Madelyn Herzfeld. “Banner Health combines scientific leadership from University of Arizona Cancer Center, an NCI-designated cancer program, and a leading cancer program driven by MD Anderson protocols. Their combined expertise makes them an ideal Carevive customer and we are thrilled to bring them into our network.”
